    Gurkhas

Labour lost the vote on allowing these brave men the right to live here, hooray!as a nationalist who opposes immigration even i feel humbled by these men and i think they deserve to have the choice to live here after serving our nation so well.Unlike the hundreds of thousands of illegal scroungers coming here each year!another shocking defeat for brown this week!

He's backed the wrong horse for the wrong reasons, and while i sometimes defend him on issues, he deserve what he gets for this. the tories and libs have taken full advantage and its only right they should get to stay.
Its a good victory for all of us i think.

thats populist politics for you. Brown seemed to think with the current concern over immigration that the public would agree with him if he refused entry, however he scored an amazing own goal. The public object to large scale, uncontrolled immigration not from those who have served and risked lives in support of Britain, this PM is so out of touch, labour must be so embarrassed by him.

    Isn't everyone?
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised 'for the good of its victims' may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us 'for our own good' will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Lewis

I for one don't want them all over here. It's ok kidding your selves that they are all heroes and we need to to look after them all, however lets have a bit of reality here. You join the army in Naipaul at twenty, get married and have three kids with your wife by the age of twenty five. You get out of the army, and then have the right to move to Britain with your family, get a nice little council house and all the benefits you can wave a stick at. Have none of you the sense to look at the bigger picture. If we start letting them in willy nilly, the waiting list to become a Gurkha will be longer than the que of immigrants at the other end of the channel tunnel.

I disagree with you on this one cagan, the amount of Gurkas accepted by the British Army is only finite, and as for the "having three kids by the age of 25" this is completely unsubstantiated. Giving these soldiers the right to live in this country is only right. Many of them have no desire to live here by the way, but they should be entitled to for they have served the nation, with distinction in many cases and this loyalty should be recognised, and rewarded.

They have contributed to this country more than you or I have CAGAN. I think that they most certainly deserve the right to live here. Surely your objection to immigrants is that they supposedly don't contribute properly to the nation?

Anyone else read this comment yesterday Hush, Miss Lumley, the Gurkhas knew the deal | Dominic Lawson - Times Online? I thought it was interesting, and whilst I still believe that Brown got this one wrong (a habit he seems no closer to breaking) I wonder why the other side of the argument was not heard.
"While Gurkhas are still paid less than their British comrades, this government has markedly increased their pension payments: a typical Gurkha NCO retiring at 33 after 15 years’ service now receives a pension greater than the salary of a Nepalese government minister."
"Conservative hypocrisy on this issue is emetic – by the end of their period of office in 1997 only five ex-Gurkhas had been given rights of residency, as against 6,000 under the present government."
Has the entire government just given up with trying to win the electorate round?
"The object of universities is not to make skilful lawyers, physicians or engineers. It is to make capable and cultivated human beings." John Stewart Mill
