The Labour Government has paid the TUC £3.6m over the last six years from its foreign aid budget, to pay for the education of British trade unionists to support advocacy work within Britain!
The grant for 2009-11 is through a Partnership Programme Arrangement (PPA), a system of funding designed to support dedicated aid charities such as Oxfam, despite the fact that according to an independent report, there is little evidence of the effectiveness of the TUC in this sphere. There is no requirement within the TUC's PPA that the money should be spent abroad!!
So the TUC receive a highly dubious series of grants from the British Taxpayer via the Labour Government, at the same time as the financially strapped Labour Party are begging the TUC for donations for their election campaign! You couldn't make it up!
Your last sentence ties in very nicely with my "people who don't understand economics" remark in my reply to "Labour: Who do they represent?"
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised 'for the good of its victims' may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us 'for our own good' will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Lewis
