Smile Labour voters fleeing their party for the BNP

Leading Labour MP Frank Field last night warned Gordon Brown that voters were fleeing their party for the BNP.
Mr Field, who led the rebellion over the 10p tax row, said traditional Labour supporters are furious over “uncontrolled immigration”.
He urged the PM to act quickly or the rising popularity of the British National Party could seriously damage Labour at the next General Election.
He warned: “Failure to act may not simply benefit the Conservative Party.
“Further inaction could provide the BNP with another political bridgehead into the core Labour vote. Too many voters have already thought the unthinkable on immigration and then acted by voting BNP.”
Last week the Daily Star told how the BNP was making inroads into mainstream politics and could be running Stoke-on-Trent City Council within three years.
Former minister Mr Field, 65, also called for a debate to give England its own Parliament, claiming the Scots and Welsh get a much better deal since devolution.
He fears the issue has become “one of the festering sores in English politics” and could threaten Labour’s very foundations.
He said Government spending of £1,236 more per person in Scotland than in England was causing growing resentment because it provided better funding for education, health and residential care.
And he warned people were starting to question what being English actually means.
He added: “Labour voters are increasingly footloose and will vote against us at the General Election if they believe we have sold them short on both immigration and the English Question.”
Former Home Secretary David Blunkett, 60, added to Mr Brown’s woes by claiming Labour had hit “rock bottom”.
