| Brown set to call 2008 Election. Gordon Brown has put Britain on alert for a General Election next year by promising radical change from the Tony Blair years. The soon-to-be-appointed Prime Minister took over as Labour leader yesterday and raised expectations he will seek an early mandate from voters. In a speech of vaulting ambition he made clear that the country is on the verge of a new era as Mr Blair steps down. “This week marks a new start,” said Mr Brown who will meet the Queen on Wednesday to be appointed 52nd Prime Minister.........
