The Liberal Democrats recently plumbed the depths - even for one of the old corrupt parties that misgovern this country.
There is a small local council by-election taking place for Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council in Warwickshire, for Bede ward which is in Bedworth (polling day 8th February). Our local unit, ably led by Chris Turner, is putting in a hard working little campaign on behalf of our candidate Alwyn Deacon. This unit has never fought a by-election before and they have never even previously contested a seat in Nuneaton and Bedworth, but they are putting in a decent first effort.
Their campaign has clearly been good enough to put the opposition into a tail spin. On the evening of Tuesday 30th January a meeting was called in the Edward Street Day Centre, in neighbouring Nuneaton. This is in the heart of the local Muslim community. The purpose of the meeting was to organise opposition to our election campaign. The fact that these premises are run by Warwickshire County Council is in itself a disgraceful and illegal interference with then electoral process.
A very senior local Liberal Democrat attended this meeting and said openly that as we had run an excellent campaign the only option open to them was to spread a false story to the police and to the local press to the effect that one of our activists had spat in the face of one of their canvassers.
Unluckily for the Liberal Democrats in their revolting attempt to pervert the course of justice and trample on the principles of democracy, some of the 15 people who attended this squalid little meeting were so disgusted by these anti-democratic tactics that from attending an anti-BNP meeting they turned 180 degree and came to tell us what they had heard. We in turn made sure the local police were aware of this information, only to be told that they already knew about it as they had an undercover policeman attending the meeting!
Immediately after this a self important website set up by the Bedworth Liberal Democrats to host chat and comments about the by-election was closed down.
This episode, in a quiet part of England, shows in clear relief the squalid political environment in which we have to operate and which it is our task to clean up.
