Exclamation Lib Dem election fraudster to be charged.

A Liberal Democrat local election candidate arrested in a major Midland electoral fraud inquiry is to be charged with forgery. Oh, how we all benefit so from diversity. Yet, the arrested man, Mohammed Khan, could not have indulged in the corrupt electoral practices of Pakistan if our own government hadn’t provided him with the means to commit his fraud in the first place - postal voting for all and sundry!

Khan, 54, of Hob Moor Road, Small Heath, Birmingham, will this week be summoned to court to face 11 separate counts of forgery. West Midlands Police confirmed the move after Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) advice on the long-running case.

A spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that we will be issuing a warrant to summon Mr Khan to court to answer for 11 offences of forgery.”

Khan was arrested and bailed by detectives from West Midlands Police’s economic crime team, which investigates electoral fraud in the region, in April, 2006, on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud the election process.

His wife, Naseem Akhtar, was arrested a day earlier, following the discovery of a number of postal voting forms at an address in Ronald Road, in Bordesley Green.

The ward was at the centre of a vote-rigging scandal in 2004, when five councillors in Aston and Bordesley Green stepped down after the Electoral Commissioner found evidence of widespread fraud that he said “would have disgraced a banana republic”.

Khan is one of several individuals at the centre of a lengthy investigation into alleged postal vote fraud during the 2006 local council elections in Birmingham. He was arrested on April 26, 2006, nine months before five other people were arrested as part of the same inquiry.

The Mercury revealed in July last year that the CPS had advised police that fraud charges against a number of individuals - including Mr Khan - could be brought. A spokes-woman for the CPS said last night: “Our lawyers, who have been considering this case for some months, and this week we advised West Midlands Police of our decision.”

Meanwhile, another Birmingham man was found guilty of rigging votes in a Coventry Council election last week.

Iftikar Hussain, 31, the cousin of Tory councillor Altaf Adalat, denied using the identities of two other people to place fraudulent votes in the Foleshill Ward election on May 4, 2006. Councillor Adalat won the ward by six votes.

A jury at Birmingham Crown Court took just over an hour to unanimously agree that Hussain was guilty on two counts of personation.

During the trial, the jury heard that he used the identities of Abdul Khaliq and Mukhtar Hussain, who were not in the UK at the time. Hussain is due to be on February 1.
