"England's biggest St George's Day parade is facing the axe after councillors said many of those attending it were racist.
For the last decade up to 15,000 have assembled in the town of West Bromwich under the slogan 'Forever England, For Everyone'.
Children and parents from all over the country parade through the Black Country town waving St George flags and marching to rousing anthems such as Jerusalem.
Organisers say one of the aims is to reclaim the Saint George Cross from Right-wingers and make it a source of pride for all."
But last night the local council, Labour-controlled Sandwell, voted to withdraw its support for the parade. Funds will go to support a Party in the Park instead.
It leaves parade organisers with what they say is the impossible task of raising £10,000 to cover their costs with only a few weeks to go.
In a letter to the organisers, one councillor, Yvonne Davies, said the parade created an 'unhealthy atmosphere' and inspired young boys to be racist.
She wrote: 'It is not only the parade which is the problem, but the tribal excitement it creates.'

Rather a stupid decision , if a few right wing nut jobs try to hijack the parade then deal with them don't punish the majority by withdrawing funding. The sad thing is no one is surprised that English people gathering together to celebrate their history and pride in this country is deemed worrying or unhealthy by the usual suspects. These idiots are the very same individuals who insist we celebrate/respect every other culture no matter the extreme actions of a minority in their communities ... yet another decision that will ironically drive more people into the arms of the far right

Every celebration, every pub, every gathering, in every walk of life you will always get a small proportion that are racist. Doesn’t mean we have to close the whole country down.

I won’t be surprised if there is a ban on watching England play football soon. The government is being racist against the English.

Do the English normally do things on St George's Day then? I've never seen much evidence of it. It is an EU stunt, probably, but not at all a bad plan. I shall distribute straight bananas to the crowds, if I can find 'em!

St Georges day is not a recognised holiday, as such people go to school or work. I believe the government should recognise it as a holiday and allow us to celebrate it as such.

Sorry I wasn’t very clear. Yes it seems us English have nothing to celebrate apart from xmas and Easter, which are religious holidays and the odd bank holiday.

I think the government should give some money to local councils so that we can celebrate St Georges Day like the Scottish and Welsh celebrate their patron saint.

It is obvious the BNP aren't Nazi's... Most of the Nazi's are dead now.

However, it does not stop the BNP following the ideology/beliefs of Nazi's.

I would say most or nearly all. All parties have racists within them doesnt mean they are Nazi.
