    Is terrorism the new coup?

With libertarianism's future looking dim, how do you see the authoritarian measures that the UK is taking to combat terrorism?

After 9/11 people took more notice of the terrorists around the world and went to Afghanistan to correct the mistake of giving the Mujahideen guns and training camps in the first place.

Terrorism is a much greater threat to our lives than we might think. Democracy may have had it's day. Dictators will rise in Europe and 'Patriotic' Acts will be introduced to strangle privacy and personal freedom in this already 'police state' world.

Should we be worried about the integrity of our government should a disaster occur in the UK or USA?

Yes, but there's hope. Twenty years ago when some wild-eyed Trot ranted about the 'police state' everyone laughed or ignored him. Now they don't. Polls show people are worried. The state 'losing' mountains of data at regular intervals doesn't help.

So sure, if some nut dove a Jumbo jet into a British nuclear power station and irradiated Kent the government would attempt to strip out our remaining civil liberties. But they'd have a fight on their hands.

One of the most pathetic things about US gun nuts is their claim to be the 'last line of defence' against a tyrannical state. Yet not one overweight NRA mummy's boy fired one shot when Bush pushed the through the Patriot Acts. They sat on their butts drinking Coors* and polishing their 'weapons' (and we all know what that means).

Yes. We should be worried about the integrity of our government full stop. There's very little chance of a dictator appearing in Europe, unless you count the position of EU President (all hail Fuhrer Blair) so democracy hasn't had its day quite yet. Baltho is right though, if something else happened here you do wonder what the government reaction would be...
Democracy is the recurrent suspicion that more than half of the people are right more than half of the time.

Politics of fear - now come on folks, when did ANY of you last SEE a terrorist (no I don't mean on the TV news I mean in reality...) ?

There you go then - I bet not one of you - sleep soundly and don't be panicked by our control freak government sewing seeds of distrust everywhere!
