As Much Free Music as you Want? Count me in...

The application that you can download from this site is technically radio, I think, which is why it is totally legal... The program works just like iTunes, except that you can search for and listen to pretty much any music you want. I've found loads of extremely obscure stuff on there, alongside all the greats!

Someone recommended thisto me the other day, I can't speak highly enough of it. The free version has 30 second 'ad breaks' after about every 10 songs or so, but I think that's a small price to pay for unlimited free music listening

There are also several pieces of software available - such as those listed here - which enable you to save streaming audio to disk to listen to later or to burn to a CD. This is supposedly quite legal since it falls under the same legislation as recording off a radio as long as it's for personal use only, but I guess if it becomes too widespread, the major record companies will jump on it

The only 'problem' is that streaming audio tends to be a quite low bit rate, so the quality isn't exactly brilliant, but that's a personal observation about streaming audio generally, not about the recording of it.

The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us 'for our own good' will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Lewis

There's also Last FM at Last.fm - Listen to free music with internet radio and the largest music catalogue online. Its kind of like a cross between free music radio and Facebook (oh, the horror). But they do have a wide range of stuff. I'm going to go check out this spotify, cheers Dougie.

Just to clarify, I just wrote the link above, not that whole advertising sentence. Must be some internet mumbo-jumbo they've got going on.

I'm quite impressed with the sound quality, actually. Obviously it isn't the best ever, but it's good enough to enjoy without noticing an issue.
