The woman is the upper classes, with some food that the working/underclasses (dog) desperately needs. She is teasing him with it and has no compassion, he is too starved and exhausted and hypnotized to do what he should- rise up and take the cakes!

I'm not comfortable with it. As a dog owner I have trained harvey (or halfwit as I call him) not to beg and not to steal and not to eat his own dinner until he is given the ok.

That OK is given on reasonable grounds. I don't tease him with stuff like this. I work with his natural instinct, not play games with that. It is like someone offering you 10,000 pounds with no strings attached then saying...nah.

The dog is blind and has no sense of smell.

These mechanical dogs are quite lifelike, except for the stick-on eyes.

My old Bullmastiff would've taken the cakes, the tray, and possibly my hand and forearm if I tried that with her.
