Exclamation All BBC staff are equal - but some BBC staff are more equal than others!

We learn today that Labour’s BBC has “sparked controversy” by spending £750,000 of licence fee cash on a racist project to coach ethnic minority staff into top jobs. Highly paid fat cat BBC bosses, we understand, have launched an initiative to help minority employees get senior posts ahead of native British staff. Not surprisingly, many members of staff are resentful and consider the BBC’s latest manifestation of racism as “politically correct” positive discrimination – which, of course, is exactly what it is!

BBC staff are also said to be “bemused” as to how the corporation can afford to spend £750,000 on the three year scheme when it is axing up to 1,800 (mainly native British) jobs.

According to the BBC half of the 30 highly sought “fast track” places a year on the new scheme will be ring-fenced for staff from ethnic backgrounds – which means native Britons are barred from applying. In addition a further six places in the scheme will be reserved for disabled applicants – leaving just nine places from any background – including ethnic minorities.

So, to sum up, if you are “ethnic minority” and disabled then you can apply for any of the 30 places. If you are merely “ethnic minority” then you may apply for any of 24 places. If you are native-British and disabled then you can apply for any 15 places. Unfortunately, if you are an able-bodied native Briton, then you may only apply for 9 of the 30 places.

The BBC, of course, prides itself on being an equal opportunities employer (except when it comes to native Britons of course)!

We further learn that among the mentors assisting those on the apartheid-style scheme will be the BBC’s own director general Mark Thompson and members of the executive board. Furthermore the corporation is branding this injustice as “positive action”’ - rather than “positive discrimination” – which, of course, is illegal.

Somewhat hypocritically a number of Establishment politicians criticised the plans saying the BBC should promote all staff on the basis of ability not colour – which, of course, they do in when advocating “ethnic minority” shortlists in some constituencies.

Apologists for BBC racism claim that the scheme will “nurture people from ethnic minorities who have the potential to take on senior roles”. Director of BBC People Steve Kelly told in-house magazine Ariel: “Because the BBC now believes that change is not going to happen any other way, it has made the conscious decision to take positive action.” This comes after corporation bosses have been stung by claims it is more “hideously white” than ever and follows comment from the beginning of the month, by Lenny Henry, who lambasted the BBC and other broadcasters for not employing enough black staff. Henry reportedly called on broadcasters to take “affirmative action” to remedy the situation.

All of which reminds us of George Orwell’s Animal Farm – which we misquote as:

All BBC staff are equal – but some BBC staff are more equal than others!
