ASYLUM SEEKERS IN GLASGOW (1)

Hi there, this is my first posting on this site.

My own bugbear is the continuing build up of asylum seekers, illegal and economic immigrants to Britain. I live in Glasgow, Scotland, and Glasgow has now become the biggest ‘‘dumping ground’’ for asylum seekers in Britain. This came about circa seven years ago when Glasgow City Council did a deal with the Home Office to accommodate, under the dispersal scheme, some 475 asylum seekers in Glasgow for an initial payment of circa one hundred an twenty million pounds (sic) of British taxpayers’ money. The original 475 have now swelled to thousands. Recently a second Home Office deal was achieved for a larger sum of taxpayers’ money. For this payment the asylum seekers were given FREE furnished accommodation, FREE money, FREE NHS and dental treatment, FREE education (school or college) FREE legal aid, FREE benefits (money) - everything they get is FREE.

For those living in England and of those who are reassured that Scotland (mostly Glasgow) is receiving its percentage of asylum seekers - not so fast. It is estimated that asylum seekers who get the right to stay in Glasgow, of those approximately two thirds leave Glasgow and Scotland to take up permanent residence in England. Glasgow has become the back door and a revolving door for those asylum seekers wishing to take up legal residence in Britain. Once the Glasgow asylum seekers ‘‘get their papers’’ to stay in Britain they head for England and Glasgow City Council fills their vacant accommodation with other asylum seekers.

At this time of posting, Glasgow has some eleven hundred failed asylum families who have had their applications to stay in Britain heard and a legal decision taken that they have no right (or ever had) to remain here. Problem is, the failed asylum seekers refuse to leave. Whenever any of these failed asylum seeking families are collected for deportation - all hell breaks loose. Numerous ‘‘asylum welcoming groups’’ start screaming abuse at the Home Office. The usual insults of ‘brutal, humiliating dawn raids,’ ‘dawn raid teams,’ ‘immigration snatch squads,’ ’doors being booted in by metal battering rams and children being dragged out screaming.’
Quote from a communication from the Immigration Department:- ‘in a recent experiment approximately 40 families we invited to present themselves for deportation but of these, approximately 39 then disappeared and have not been seen since.’ One reason why they disappear? The asylum seekers’ neighbours alert the failed families as to when the Immigration Officials are coming to collect them.

That’s my first posting - merely to acquaint those outside Glasgow and Scotland with the problems we’re having with asylum seekers North of the Border.
