Recently released documents have revealed that the British government tested E coli bacteria on the towns of Swindon and Southampton between 1965 and 1967. The documents do not reveal if anyone was infected by the test.

The tests were to analyse whether climate and weather conditions affected the effectiveness of the bacteria. Five stations were set up in each test. One was placed upwind, one in the town, and three downwind.

Southampton was tested in winter of 1965 and again the following summer. Tests in Swindon followed. The documents say that Swindon "was selected because it is a reasonably large inland industrial city in the midst of a large rural area."
