| Media ignoring MP's scamming! It has recently come to light how a Tory councillor has been arrested in connection with alleged corruption. Now “Tories and corruption”, like “Labour and sleaze”, roll off the tongue as naturally as “bread and butter” of course! But why is it, we ask, that the so-called “local” media are so happy to report on the alleged misdeeds of individual Establishment councillors whilst remaining tight-lipped over the antics of Establishment MPs? A case in point is the scandal of how scores, if not hundreds of MPs of all parties, are cashing in on the London property boom by buying second homes in London and claiming our tax money as “allowances” to pay the mortgage, council tax, utility and general cleaning and maintenance bills on these properties! Indeed many MPs are claiming over £20,000 per year on such speculative “investments” – even though they live within the London (and even in London!) commuter belt and have no real justification for purchasing them. Whereas the scam is not illegal, it being one of the “Privileges (Abuses?) of Parliament”, we consider it a scandal - a money-making activity that is costing the British taxpayers £ millions per annum and resulting in politicians making £ hundreds of thousands each through property speculation! Strangely the media isn’t asking of individual politicians: ”how much are you making out of the taxpayer” - however the possibility exists that they may start asking should public indignation demand such! Is it any wonder then that a Tory MP is currently attempting to have the Data Protection Act amended to exempt MPs from disclosure of their "allowances" and "expenses" under the Act? ”The Freedom of Information Act already has exemptions for personal data and information provided in confidence. According to its stated aim, David Maclean's Bill is therefore entirely extraneous. MPs cannot hide away from the fact that this Bill is being introduced just weeks after they have been forced to publish more detailed information about their travel expenses. "One only needs to look at the Scottish Parliament, where every single invoice which MSPs claim for is published online, to see how much more open Westminster could be. When this data was first published in Scotland, the amount of travel claims made plunged. David Maclean's Bill would stop this from happening. "No-one is above the law. When politicians start to act as if they are, democracy itself is threatened." http://www.bnp.org.uk/reg_showarticl...contentID=2492 |
