| A vigilante beat up two neighbours he suspected were paedophiles, a court heard. Ronald Brown, 50, believed he was right to attack the men on their doorsteps and presented a high risk of re-offending, Bradford Crown Court was told. A judge warned him he either goes to jail or does unpaid work to make up for the damage he has caused. Brown struck twice in less than two weeks at flats where he lived in York House, Idlethorpe Way, Thorn Edge, Bradford. He attacked Anthony Bulmer on January 5, causing him actual bodily harm, and, on January 17, he beat up another male resident and damaged property. Brown was dealt with by Bradford magistrates in September for assault by beating and criminal damage. He received a four-month jail sentence suspended for two years coupled with a supervision order. Today Brown appeared at Bradford Crown Court to be sentenced for causing Mr Bulmer actual bodily harm. The Judge, Recorder Christopher Knox, said it was "pretty startling" that the cases were heard in separate courts "in the wrong order". Prosecutor John Bull said Brown pleaded guilty to the actual bodily harm charge on October 3 and the case was adjourned for a probation service report. Mr Bull said Mr Bulmer was set on by Brown and another man after they knocked on his door at night and accused him of sexually assaulting a girl. Mr Bulmer called the police but when he answered the door again he was thrown to the floor, punched and kicked in the head, ribs and stomach. He recognised Brown as living in a flat a few floors above. Mr Bulmer's victim impact statement from said he was so frightened and distressed he moved out of his home into emergency accommodation, leaving behind his possessions. Brown's barrister, Jayne Beckett, said he felt anger against paedophiles and found it difficult to control his temper. He was evicted from his home in August and was being treated for depression. Recorder Knox said the probation service saw Brown as "a high risk case". He said two men suffered vigilante attacks for no reason. Brown suspected they were paedophiles and did not see his behaviour as wrong. "Either this man goes to prison or there has to be a shake-up in his personal circumstances," the judge said. Brown stated he was medically unfit to do unpaid community work but, the judge pointed out, he was physically able to assault people. "People don't feel safe in their flats because you come round and beat them up," he added. The judge delayed sentencing Brown until Thursday so a doctor can assess if he is fit for community work. "It is time you did something useful and positive to make up for all the damage you have caused," he said. Brown was granted bail until he is sentenced. Source Seems like the 'vigilante' in my eyes did a good job and i don't see how the judge can say two men suffered vigilante attacks for no reason, When in fact the two people in question have had sex with young people. |
