The Prime Minister says he has full confidence in the Home Secretary after the Conservatives accused her of a cover-up.

Emails published in the Daily Mail reveal Jacqui Smith knew thousands of illegal immigrants were working for the Government as early as July, and accepted advice from civil servants not to make the information public.

The Home Secretary will make a statement on the issue in the House of Commons later today.

It emerged on Sunday that at least 5,000 illegal immigrants had been cleared by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to work in sensitive security positions.

Shadow immigration minister Damian Green said: "The original loophole in security checks was bad enough.

"Trying to hide it from the public is even worse, because it damages confidence in our security arrangements."

The documents reveal:

:: The Home Office was informed of the problem on July 2;

:: The Home Secretary saw a paper on the issue on July 12;

:: She launched an internal investigation to identify the scale of the problem;

:: On August 9 Ms Smith accepted a recommendation from her officials to keep the situation out of the public domain;

:: On August 20, a briefing note from the Policing Policy and Operations Directorate told the Home Secretary that 5,000 illegal immigrants had been given SIA licences. It warned that if the media became aware of the issue they would highlight "negative stories";

:: On August 30, officials confirmed the figure to Ms Smith. They repeated their advice to stay quiet to avoid "significant criticism of the Home Office".

A Home Office spokesman has defended the department saying: "The responsible thing to do was to establish the full nature and scale of the issue rather than put partial and potentially misleading information into the public domain."
