Question But what about OUR kids?

According to a report in a London newspaper:

Quote: Teachers say Newbury Park’s “language of the month” programme has also helped tackle the sense of alienation felt by newcomers to the school in Redbridge, East London.

In little more than a decade, the proportion of pupils at the school who do not speak English at home has doubled to 80 per cent.

The biggest ethnic group are Tamils who have fled the civil war in Sri Lanka.

“You have 250 Tamil children in the school. It is just polite to greet them in their own language and recognise their culture,” said teacher Joe Debono, who runs the language scheme. “And it is a way of celebrating the ethnic diversity of the school and not seeing it as a problem. Unquote.

Interestingly the same media report here claims that 41 languages are spoken at the school. Languages listed include Albanian, Arabic, Bengali and Punjabi. Strangely English isn’t listed!

Newbury Park Primary School, in the London Borough of Redbridge, is decribed in Ofsted’s Section 9/10 report for 2004 as

Quote: “a larger than average community school, which provides for boys and girls aged 3 to 11 years. Pupils come from a wide range of social, economic and cultural backgrounds but overall, the socio-economic status of families is below average . . . . . . . . Those needing regular support have a range of needs with most experiencing moderate learning difficulties. Pupils come from a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds; the largest community represented in the school being Tamils from Sri Lanka.

Many of these families have had refugee status. Approximately 73 percent of pupils come from homes where English is spoken as an additional language and currently 120 pupils are supported by additional funding. Twenty pupils are at the early stages of learning English. Similar to other schools in the area, the school experiences difficulties in recruiting and retaining teachers, particularly those with management experience. Over the previous two years, 18 teachers have left and 13 have been appointed. There are five vacant teaching posts covered by teachers on temporary contracts. Unquote.

In 2004 there were, according to the same Ofsted report, some 104 “White British & Irish” pupils on the school roll of some 677 pupils – that’s a mere 15.6%. At that time, as the Ofsted report above mentions – 73% of pupils did not speak English at home.

Well, it is now 2008, fours years later, and we learn from the media report that the percentage of pupils who do not speak English at home has risen to 80% - which, in turn, implies that the percentage of “white British and Irish” pupils in that school must have fallen below 15.6%.

Bearing in mind the obvious “special needs” of this school, it is clear that disproportionate sums of money from the education budget is being spent there and in the MANY other similar schools across the country. Clearly, educating other countries’ children presents a very real and very substantial cost to the British taxpayer.

In addition, we ask, what special provisions and safeguards are in place to ensure that “white British and Irish” students’ education and cultural heritage, in the MANY schools like this, are not adversely affected by being a minority group in what are effectively foreign schools?

I think we should be told – don’t you?
