UKIP silent on Wales Assembly fiasco!

A report submitted yesterday shows how UKIP were remaining tight-lipped over the loss of over half of their local authority councillors.Today our correspondent outlines the scale of that party’s humiliation in the recent Wales Assemble elections – a humiliation brought about by elements of that party’s leadership refusing to accept hard political reality!

The problem for UKIP’s Top Brass is that they apparently believed that they could, provided they threw enough money into the campaign, retain much of the political ground won in the 2004 European Elections.

It may be remembered that just three years ago, in 2004, UKIP won 96,677 votes in Wales – representing 10.5% of the total vote.

Now UKIP’s Top Brass assumed that by injecting huge dollops of cash into the campaign they could retain around 70% of this vote – enabling them to win 4 or 5 Wales Assembly seats and a great deal of political credibility. This, of course, is where the “we are on 7%” of the poll myth, so frequently trotted out during the campaign, came from. This being a figure derived from wishful thinking and ignoring the stark evidence from the streets.

So instead of winning around 50,000 votes and 7% of the poll – they ended up with a little over 27,000 – 3.9% - for a financial outlay estimated to be at least £200,000! It will be remembered, of course, that UKIP paid for an expensive promotional leaflet with a free postage return coupon, to be delivered to every home in Wales just prior to the election.

So whereas a BNP vote cost around 60 pence to win – each UKIP vote cost around £7.40! And this does not include the cost of the hugely expensive Cardiff North campaign, in which UKIP’s aristocratic socialite candidate of pink dress fame, won a less than impressive 4.1%

And on the subject of polls, or Poles to be precise, one UKIPer has now even suggested that they – like Plaid Polski - should start publishing campaign leaflets in Polish to attract the anti EU element of the Polish migrant vote in places such as Llanelli!
