Gordon Brown seems to have done very well again.
Firstly he as chancellor, overlooks the problems being built up by the Banks by allowing incorrect practices to flourish.
Secondly he is allowed to dangle a carrot in front of Lloyds TSB to purchase HBOS, when it is near to collapse. We don't know the ins and out of the proposition other than it appears Lloyds TSB went for the acquisition without performing due diligence and with government backing that competition rules would be waved.
Halifax is a good profitable business but with the problems that we now know Bank of Scotland had. Lloyds TSB should have left well alone.
Has Gordon Brown and his government brought a well respected bank to its knees unnecessarily?
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised 'for the good of its victims' may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us 'for our own good' will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Lewis
