An interesting decision from the Romanian Constitutional Court (CCR), which announced on 7 October that it's taking as unconstitutional the Romanian implementation of the data retention directive as issued by the EU. This has potentially significant implications for other EU member countries which are already implementing similar data retention policies, such as here in the UK. I'm hoping that one or more of the groups dedicated to maintaining the freedom and privacy rights of individuals will take up a similar challenge in the UK courts.
The full court ruling (in English) is available from here.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised 'for the good of its victims' may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us 'for our own good' will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Lewis
