    They Don't Deserve Our Votes

    Hi All,

A terrible thing to admit, especially in a forum like this, but with the exception of voting I have never done a political or protest act in my life. Over time I have voted for all three of the parties, having naively thought Westminster was populated by MPs who were interested in serving the public and who could be largely trusted. However, as a result of the actions of members from all parties over recent years I now believe that none of them deserve my vote! Why?

    1. Because they follow the agendas of the people who fund them, not the interests of the people as a whole.
    2. Because their policies are driven by short term popularity, not the long term good of the country.
    3. Because they believe confrontation is more productive than collaboration and cooperation.
    4. Because their televised antics during PM’s question time bring the whole country in to disrepute.
    5. Because despite the recent expenses scandal, they still don’t see why people distrust them.
    6. Because they resist introducing technology which would allow us all to participate in decision making for fear it will erode their power.
    7. Because they favour spin and presentation over truth and content.
    8. Because they preach openness and access yet hide behind secrecy and opaqueness.

The problem is that my options for protest are limited:

    1. I could not vote but then nothing would change.
    2. I could have a protest vote for a minority party but all that would do is give some potentially unsavory character a mandate that they do not deserve
    3. I could undertake a civil protest but a mass movement of one will have little impact and I have no great desire to throw myself in front of the queen’s horse because I am my pro animal welfare and anti getting trampled!!!

The solution I have come up with in this digital age is to start up a Facebook group called ‘They Don’t Deserve Our Votes’. This aims to provide a simple, effective means by which those of us who are dissatisfied with how MPs and political parties conduct themselves can register that dissatisfaction en masse. The more people who join, the louder the message, it’s as simple as that.

If anyone is interested supporting the idea just visit the group at (http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?v=wall&gid=110995025581275) and click to register.

In the meantime, does anyone share my disenchanted view and if so, do you have any ideas for how to get the message across.

    Bob

Then elect people, you believe do deserve your votes.

    There aren't any.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised 'for the good of its victims' may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us 'for our own good' will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Lewis
