I don't want to glorify war, but having some relatives who are still alive today after taking part in heroic flights in Pathfinder squadrons, I can only hope that their deeds will be fondly remembered.
No I don't think he is out of step or non PC. The post only went up a couple of hours ago.
I think the majority of members of this forum weren't even born before WWII was over. My son refers to modern history as the 60s for heaven's sake, and studied the Bay of Pigs, Suez and Korea for his history GCSE. I suspect that the majority who give the valour of their forefathers a thought do so from the perspective of a Hollywood or Pinewood Studios technicolour lens. I am sure no disrespect is intended.
The bravery of our Bombers squadrons has never been in question. The Lancaster at the center of the Memorial Flight has always been recognition enough and a far greater tribute than any statue they may erect in Green Park at a reported cost of £2.5m.
My first thoughts on reading this story was not of the sacrifice of past generations but that I am in the wrong job....Two and an alf bloddy millions for a statue ??? there aving a bubble
Regardless of what people consider as the rights and wrongs of the bombing campaigns during WW2 i think this is long overdue, as with all war memorials they are not there to glorify war or victory, they are there as a memorial to those who died, and hopefully to make us all think before we take the courses of action and decisions that lead us into wars.
Just because i'm paranoid, doesn't mean their not after me!!!
