It comes as no surprise to me that the true financial situation is now being discovered by the new government's investigations.
Labour hid ‘scorched earth’ debts - Times Online
It is bad enough finding out what many of us had expected; is now already the time that we need to consider how to prevent such occurrences in future? I think so!
That's very depressing reading, but not wholly unexpected.

Jesus said,

The labour party should have their own wing in the scrubs, crooks, the lot of them

In view of the Labour Governments refusal to complete a full economic review prior to the election, thus preventing any opposition politician from knowing the true economic position of the country, this latest scandal comes as no surprise. We have had thirteen years of economic incompetence, obfuscation, hubris and straightforward corruption and dishonesty from Labour. Our new coalition government faces one of worst economic situations this country has ever been in. Fortunately all the indications are that the principle movers seem to be absolutely sincere in putting the country's interest first. But let nobody fool themselves into believing that the economic pain which is to come is anything but essential if we are to have any chance of economic recovery, and the fault lies squarely at the feet of the outgoing and soundly defeated government.
However we must always remember that it is in the interest of the current government to say it is worse than they expected in order that they may implement the cuts more excessively than they have previously said....unforeseen circumstances can be a great excuse.
You are of course right. However a considerable amount of questionable expenditure was committed to without publicity in the dying days of the Labour government. With Labour divulging as little information as possible about our parlous economic position, and Brown/Darling playing up the recovery, the opposition parties had little solid information to base their fiscal policy on, so it is little wonder that the skeletons in the cupboard are now appearing. It is also little wonder that the incoming Liberal Conservative Coalition Government should comment on it. One person's excuse is another's reason. Whatever the outcome of the election anyone who has not been in suspended hibernation, or who has more than one brain cell, would have known that the elected government would be raising taxes and reducing public sector costs. To not do so would be criminally irresponsible.
One thing I would never accuse the conservatives of is naivety. They knew there was a whole load of **** swept under the carpet, and I have no doubt that they knew they could use it publicitywise to implement a harder system without the blame.
I would have been disappointed in any new party who didn't.
