    Shining bright and brand new

AFTER AN exhausting week during which they listened to the speaker being re-elected and shouted a lusty “aye”, taking the oath of allegiance and learning how to fill-in their swindle sheets, now known as expenses claims, the new MPs have returned to their constituencies for a well-earned weekend break.
Some will have already been seduced by the charms of the heavily subsidised bars and restaurants of the Palace of Westminster; others will have fallen under the spell of the gaudy lights, the nightlife and the low-joints of London itself. Most will still be totally convinced that they have a mission and are still eager, willing and ready to change the world completely, poor deluded fools that they are.
Next week they will have to start cracking on with the vital job of saving the economy, saving the country and saving their seats.
The old sweats in the House will already have told them that, individually, they will be able to achieve absolutely nothing. Like new boys and girls everywhere, they won’t have believed a word of it. For them there are dragons to be slain, damsels rescued and mortgages paid.
They will all feel that they have a received a call to make this a land fit for management consultants, estate agents and travelling salesmen - the salt of the earth, the backbone of the nation and the driving force behind the coming economic miracle. Those, in other words, just like themselves.
Let’s hope that they all get a restful weekend. This time next week coach loads of them are going to have to start explaining how an extra £6 billion of cuts in government expenditure this year are not going to affect their own constituents. That is when the real hard work will start.
