Voting is finally underway in the delayed Thirsk and Malton election, in what will be the first electoral test of the new coalition government. The contest was postponed from 6 May following the death of the UK Independence Party candidate, John Boakes.

The Conservatives are expected to win comfortably in the newly created seat, formed from two former Conservative held seats - Ryedale and Vale of York. The Tory candidate, Anne McIntosh, whose York constituency was abolished by boundary changes, enjoys a notional majority of 14,687.

The candidates are John Clark (Liberal Party), Toby Horton (UK Independence Party), Howard Keal (Liberal Democrat), Anne McIntosh (Conservative), Jonathan Roberts (Labour).
