You MUST stand up to Obama, Mr Cameron

Well, I think he has! It has been a joining of minds on issues common to both countries and talking the same language! Both great statesmen prepared to engage in talks virually in private rather rhetoric through the media!

Again this reminds me of the short exchange in the 2003 film 'Love Actually'......
Press Conference Reporter: Mr. President, has it been a good visit?

The President: Very satisfactory indeed. We got what we came for, and our special relationship is still very special.

    Press Conference Reporter: Prime Minister?

Prime Minister: I love that word "relationship." Covers all manner of sins, doesn't it? I fear that this has become a bad relationship; a relationship based on the President taking exactly what he wants and casually ignoring all those things that really matter to, erm... Britain. We may be a small country, but we're a great one, too. The country of Shakespeare, Churchill, the Beatles, Sean Connery, Harry Potter. David Beckham's right foot. David Beckham's left foot, come to that. And a friend who bullies us is no longer a friend. And since bullies only respond to strength, from now onward I will be prepared to be much stronger. And the President should be prepared for that.
    If only eh!

How very appropriate! This describes the reality of our relationship with the USA perfectly. Any special relationship, if it ever truly existed, ended with the political demise of Thatcher and Reagan. I feel that we have little to lose and much to gain by telling the US, in diplomatic terms of course, to go forth and multiply.

I will await the return of David Cameron before I make judgement on whether there still is a special relationship. I have never imagined it to be that we seem to assume that we think alike on everything or even on most issues. Unless I am kidding myself I believe we exert more influence on American policy than any other European country. The US is however hugely commercial, nothing wrong with that on the surface, but it is obvious that the Americans are only into Iraq and Afghanistan for what they can get out of it, and the ruthless search for oil or chemicals etc., has a major impact upon their motivation. Whether we give them respectability is debatable.
That the Americans appear to distrust us is due in no small measure to our almost complete lack of immigration controls, exacerbated by the rules created by the EU. I share that suspicion, we no longer have any real idea of the make up of our nation. This suspicion isn't new by the way, just since New Labour swept in, but it goes back further than that as we became more involved with the EU; we only have ourselves to blame.
