A hospital where four babies died under the care of one surgeon must not resume heart surgery until it improves, a report said today.
The paediatric heart surgery unit at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford should remain closed until the right mix of doctors is in place or until it links up with another unit.
I gather there is no criticism of the surgeons involved, so what is wrong with our health service that we seem to be allowing surgeons to operate in other than top class circumstances? Certainly there is a conflict between having local facilities and having well-experienced medical departments, so what is the answer?

The answer must be that no-one in their right mind operates on the hearts of babies unless they are already very poorly.
If the surgeons are not up to the procedure they should transfer the child to a hospital specialising in that procedure.
We also need to be aware that not every illness can be fixed, and people of all ages do die. Sad but true. However, "all the cases were complex and surgery was high risk".
