| United Kingdom Politics Having secured a third term, we will fulfil our promise to renew our country and take Britain forward to a better future not back to a failed Tory past. Our continuing success depends on our continuing to pursue a new Labour agenda as a modern progressive party. We will focus on three crucial areas: the economy, modernising public services, tackling crime and asylum; building on what we have achieved to make Britain better since coming to office in 1997 |

| Favourite political euphemism Whats your favourite political euphemism? Mine came during the recent presidential election, on BBC news an American correspondent referred to a possdible stumbling block for Obama as "certain American's concerns over his exotic background". Isn't that the nicest, most endearing way of describing racism ever? "I'm not racist, I'm just concerned about exotic backgrounds". Classic. Of course there are lots of others. A recent contender is the "economic downturn", a much friendlier version of the global economic crisis. Makes it sound a lot less serious. Lets not make a drama out of a...downturn. And who could forget the most amazing euphemism ever..... .....rendition. Its an absolute masterstroke, hey I despise the Bush Administration, but I have to recognise the genuis behind this piece of linguistic manipulation. You can just imagine a meeting somewhere in Washington, about 7 years ago... "What we need is a re-branding, because the word 'torture' just summons up too many bad images" "How about 'rendition'?" "Nice one Karl, you rock. Now watch this drive" I liked it when people debribed McCain as a "seasoned campaigner". Hmmnn. No ageism there. They were obviously referring to the fact that he never goes out without dousing himself in salt and pepper. Anyone got any others?
