| Banned for offending the memory of dead fish Traditionalists in the English fishing town of Lyme Regis have decided to call a halt to the sport of 'conger cuddling' after an animal activist allegedly complained that the event was 'disrespectful' to dead fish. The tradition involves one team trying to hit another with a dead conger eel tied to a rope and in recent years was used as a fund-raising event for the town's famous local lifeboat. But according to Reuters, the event was banned after an animal rights activist complained that it was "disrespectful" to dead fish and threatened to campaign against the event. Some animal activists have a reputation for violence in Britain, but the RNLI, the charity that runs UK lifeboats, concluded that the affair "might show them up in a bad light," Rob Michael, chairman of the town's lifeboat guild, told Reuters http://www.indexonline.org/en/indexi...ory-of-d.shtml |
