United Kingdom Politics Having secured a third term, we will fulfil our promise to renew our country and take Britain forward to a better future not back to a failed Tory past. Our continuing success depends on our continuing to pursue a new Labour agenda as a modern progressive party. We will focus on three crucial areas: the economy, modernising public services, tackling crime and asylum; building on what we have achieved to make Britain better since coming to office in 1997

Church scraps Remembrance Sunday service because it's not multi-cultural enough

PARISHIONERS have voiced their dismay after a church in Wood Green cancelled this year's Remembrance Sunday service - because it's not multi-cultural enough.

Father Colin Coppen of St Michael's Church, Bounds Green Road, announced the decision to cull the annual civic service after talks with Haringey Council.

But one churchgoer, who did not want to be named, said: "I've lived here all my life and we've always had it.

"It's a long-standing tradition and these people who fought in the war, we need to remember them.

"We should have a service so families have somewhere to go, where they can have a service, a reading and hymns, and be peaceful in the church and quietly reflect and remember what happened. It's very important, really."

The Journal understands the decision was taken in the hope the council will devise a more "inclusive" from of commemoration - one that does not involve non-Anglicans having to attend church.

Father Coppen said: "This allows the borough council to think how it wants to express and celebrate the contribution that worldwide cultures made to the victory in two world wars, without feeling that it necessarily has to conform to the state religion. The change has been entirely amicable."...
