Britain's biggest prison is housing criminals from 73 different countries, inspectors revealed last night.

It lays bare the scale of the foreign prisoner crisis facing John Reid.

The Home Secretary wants inmates to serve some of their sentences in their own countries in a bid to ease the over-crowding crisis which has led to convicts being housed in police cells.

But the situation at Wandsworth Prison, in South London, reveals the bureaucratic nightmare he is facing.

Before he can send any of the 10,000 overseas convicts held nationwide back home, he must first strike deals with each country - and with 73 nationalities in Wandsworth alone, this may take years
