Unskilled workers will have no jobs in a decade, says Brown

Gordon Brown delivered a stark warning yesterday that unskilled workers could find themselves out of work and without any job prospects within ten years as a result of globalisation.

The Chancellor, addressing the Microsoft Government Leaders Forum at the Scottish Parliament, in Edinburgh, said that to meet the challenge, it was vital for Britain to move from being an above-average economy to being “at all times truly world class”.

Across Britain and the advanced industrial economy, globalisation was creating a crisis of unskilled work.

“Of 3.4 million unskilled jobs today by 2020 we will need only 600,000,” he said. “So unless you have skills you are at risk of being unemployed. Highly skilled jobs must, and will, replace lower-skilled jobs.

“The nine million highly skilled graduate jobs of today must become, by 2020, fourteen million: instead of 25 per cent of jobs, 40 per cent of all jobs.”...
