Canada has a mandate to support NATO and its' war on terror in Afghanistan. However, world events recently changed this.
Canada has committed to keep military in Afghanistan until 2011. This move of course is political. The war has always been unpopular and this being election time, Harper didn't want the war as a election issue.
Now the "change in world events" I mentioned above is this. In the article below, I read that SA who are apparent supporters of the Taliban, have brokered a deal to bring back the Taliban to Afghanistan.
Therefore, it would seem that Canada has been a fool trying sincerely to uphold the UN mandate fighting the Taliban while all along behind close doors a negotiation is under way. Pakistan has already negotiated a deal with the Taliban.
I don't think most people support the Taliban but what they do support is the money. There is a big market for poppy growers and it is believe that many of the poppy plantations are helping finance Taliban and Al Qaeda. Not only are the poppy drugs being use to finance Taliban the drugs are also ship to western countries for consumption.
So, it is apparent that NATO allies are fighting what seems a losing battle against terror in the war in Afghanistan.
