| What to do about the United Nations? Even Arguing that the UN is irrelevant recognises that its theoretical purpose is both admirable and necessary in today’s interconnected, globalised world. But the charge that the UN is ineffective and unimportant centres around the claim that the UN is not working as it should be-it is not achieving its theoretical goals. The fact that the UN is made up and funded by Governments means that national priorities and strategic interest overshadow the UN’s goals, making consensus hard to achieve and action limited. The fact that just 5 permanent members of the Security Council, out of 192 members, have the ability to bring the UN to standstill is evidence that the UN does not function in a fair or effective manner. The control of these 5 over UN reform also means that change is very unlikely to come from within the UN, the 5 permanent members are not going to vote to reduce their own power. Despite this the UN is the best poised organisation to make a difference in the world, to solve humanitarian need, promote human rights, reduce climate change and create a fairer, safer world. The pooled resources of the UN’s member governments are the best means we have to achieve these aims. However the use of these resources and the functioning of the UN needs to be made more effective. Governments need to be held to account, encouraged to act. Global support is needed to scrutinise and support the UN’s actions and encourage reform. Without individuals participating and taking interest in the UN governments will continue to prioritise their personal agendas without having to take responsibility and be held to account for their actions and decisions. The Influx Project is a new initiative aiming to revitalise the UN and mobilise global support to make it work better. For the UN to create a fairer and safer world we need to create a fairer, more effective and accountable UN. That’s what the Influx project can do with your support.
