BBC NEWS | Americas | Obama to end military gay policy

B.H Obama is to end the American military policy of Don't ask, don't tell, which states that homosexual recruits to the military can join the military assuming they do not share their sexual orientation.

This is obviously going to get a lot of backlash from the Republican Party who; I can only assume, detest this policy.

I am sure Flash disagrees with Obama on this policy, but what is your view?

I doubt it will be very effective, those who don't state their sexual orientation won't make it open with the amount of prejudice, especially from a right-wing military. I see it as a non-issue, I'm assuming there isn't a clause in the contract about stating sexual orientation, if there is, all he has to do is remove it.

Naw, I think this is a big deal. The reason Harvard will not reinstate the ROTC program (or so they claim) because of the Don't Ask Don't Tell Policy. I think that's sort of a big deal since Harvard is, supposedly, the best school in the US. And despite the fact that the military is mainly comprised of right-wingers, there are military personnel who have resisted the don't ask don't tell policy and many who have been kicked out. I think it's 10,000 or around that.

I agree, it is significant. Don't ask don't tell is essentially institutionalised Homophobia, any form of Homophobia is unacceptable in modern society.

I don't know what has changed. The US Marines have always been a bunch of queers.

I doubt anything will change, you can get rid of the legislation, but you won't be able to change people's attitudes. The army will probably remain a homophobic institution for a long time yet.

The Army will always be straight.

The Air Force will always be metrosexual.

The Navy has never sobered up long enough to figure out their sexual orentation.

The Marines are the fag service.
