| St Davids Day March & Assembly Demo 2006 Since there is so little here, I thought that I would paste this in from our site http://ctd.6.forumer.com REPUBLICAN ST DAVID’S DAY DEMONSTRATION 10am Weds March 1st, Oval Basin, Cardiff Bay RIGHTS FOR THE PEOPLE NOT ROYAL PREROGATIVES Mrs Windsor will officially open the National Assembly for Wales' new debating chamber on March 1st – St. David's Day. Our National Assembly does not have the powers to meet the needs of the people of Wales. It has fewer powers than a council - it is little more than a talking shop. It cannot make laws and it cannot raise taxes. A demonstration has been called by Cardiff Social Forum. We demand: the right of the National Assembly to decide for itself which powers it has and to determine its relationship with Britain and the rest of Europe powers for the Assembly to pursue policies for full employment, the expansion of public services and official status for the Welsh language constitutional rights not the ancient royal prerogative and the abolition of the expensive monarchy an equal Wales, free from prejudice and a political system free of patronage, deference and corruption A Government of Wales Bill is on its way through Parliament. It will give greater powers to the Westminster-based Secretary of State for Wales to block any law the Assembly might wish to make. We oppose powers being taken from the Assembly to be given to a minister of the Crown. Wales should be able to decide its own legislation without interference from the crown via Westminster ministers. If it’s good enough for Scotland, it should be good enough for Wales. For more information about this demonstration or Cardiff Social Forum's other activities, contact cardiffsocialforum@yahoo.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- And then later there is the St Davids day parade - see http://stdavidsday.org/ Celebrate Wales's National Day, Cardiff Style! Join us again this year to celebrate St David's Day with a Parade through the streets of our capital. Start Time: 3.00pm. Date: Wednesday, March 1st, 2006. Place: Sophia Close, off Cathedral Road, adjacent to the Mochyn Du. How can I get involved or help? Be part of the Parade: If you're part of a group, your group could enter a float, carry a banner, a national flag (Ddraig Goch, Dewi Sant, regional flag or or a flag of the Princes). If you have a musical instrument or are part of a band - you¹ll be most welcome, or simply join the Parade as an individual but please make sure you dress up - national dress, historical dress, the cilt - it¹s up to you. Practical assistance: The Parade is run entirely by volunteers with no official backing whatsoever. Any skill, talent or help you may be able to give us would be greatly appreciated. Please email us on info@stdavidsday.org Financial Support - The Parade Committee is striving to secure sponsorship and financial support for this year, 2007 and beyond. Help with fundraising is welcome. Next year we hope to offer a more structured approach as the Parade grows in popularity and strength. Remember: ALL ARE WELCOME - if you live in Wales, from whatever background, you are welcome on the Parade. Even if you¹re just visiting Cardiff for the day - become Welsh for the day! Join us in a joyous celebration of our identity and heritage. |
