US: Al-Qa'eda rebuilding in Pakistan

The United States and Pakistan were embroiled in a diplomatic row tonight after the head of American intelligence pointed to Pakistani territory as the centre of al-Qa'eda's terrorist network.

In an unprecedented statement the director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, publicly stated that Pakistan, a key US ally in the war on terror, was being used as a hideout by al-Qa'eda leaders to rebuild their organisation.

Mr Negroponte told a Senate committee in his annual assessment of worldwide threats against the US on Thursday that al-Qa'eda "poses the greatest threat to US interests"................
